Abandoned Dog Forms Bond With Paralyzed Cat — Comforts And Protects Her Every Step Of The Way

When 2-year-old Idgie and 7-month-old Ruth were left abandoned in Geneva, Florida outside a gated community, they had little to no chance of surviving alone.

Ruth, a small black and white kitten, was paralyzed. She wasn’t able to move her two back legs. Idgie was a chubby Dachshund who was covered in ants. She had got them by standing guard over Ruth.

No one really knew what had caused Ruth to become paralyzed in her back legs. A program coordinator at the Seminole County Animal Services, Diane Gagliano, guess it was simply something she was born with.

Despite both of their appearances, they were found in good shape. This means they probably belonged to a household at some point. However, they weren’t claimed.

Jacqueline Borum, the manager at the Hollywood Houndz Boutique and Spa, adopted both of the animals. She named Idgie and Ruth after characters in Fried Green Tomatoes because of their amazing friendship.

Their adorable story is great from beginning to end.

The two pals became local celebrities by spending much time at Borum’s shop. The Orlando Sentinel heard about their story and it went viral. The cat and dog's interaction was extremely adorable. Idgie feels the need to protect Ruth until the very end, somehow sensing she needs it. They share everything especially toys.

They love each other more and more each year. Idgie would give her life to protect her best friend if it came to that. Luckily, she won’t ever have to. Even many years after they were adopted, Idgie is Ruth’s bodyguard through thick and thin. When someone would approach her, she would make sure they were good enough for Ruth.

After she adopted Ruth and Idgie, Borum was inspired to start a nonprofit organization the provides help to shelters for covering veterinary costs. She called this nonprofit Project Paws. Ruth and Idgie are the mascots for this nonprofit of course.

Unfortunately, Ruth was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. It was attacking her red blood cells. Ruth passed over the Rainbow Bridge and Ingie was by her side the whole time until the very end. After Ruth’s passing, Borum shared on Facebook to thank the world for the love shown for this dynamic duo. Their friendship has a lot to teach humans about love and loyalty.
