The California town of Idyllwild is a charming mountain locale.

It also has a dog for a mayor.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Mayor Max II is a golden retriever, formally known as Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller, II. The sweet pup spends his days greeting residents in the back of his pickup truck, attending community events, and spreading joy to this town and his constituents. Just like a good mayor is supposed to do.

Phyllis Mueller is Max's owner, answering her phone with the greeting of "Office of the Mayor" and taking her job as Max's Chief of staff very seriously.

Idyllwild has had a dog as mayor for the last seven years. It started as a fundraiser for the local animal rescue nonprofit, Animal Rescue Friends of Idyllwild (ARF). Citizens were allowed to purchase votes for $1 each for the dog of their choice.

Mueller and her husband loved the idea and campaigned hard before writing a check for $20,000, securing the win for their dog, Max.

Sadly, the original Max passed away during his second term.

Mueller did not want the tradition to die. And so she set out to find Max's descendants so that another dog could carry on the mayoral lineage.

The search took Mueller to Max's original breeder and through three countries in all, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. She finally tracked the bloodline and bought three of Max's descendants from breeders in Ohio and California.

Max II, Mitzi, and Mikey were soon at home in Idyllwild. It did not take long for Mueller to know that Max II was destined to be the next town mayor.

He took office when he was only two months old.

Since then, Max II has been a fixture on the town's community scene. Residents can even schedule a meeting with the mayor, resulting in many a hilarious encounter. Mueller said that while Max II can be a spoiled pup at times, he takes his job as mayor of Idyllwood very seriously.
