A Strange Looking Staircase Leads To Funny And Awesome Reactions From The Passersby

Experts recommend taking the stairs over elevators or escalators as a way to add on more exercise to our daily routine. However, when given the choice, most people will choose to go up an escalator instead of taking the steps. Volkswagen, a popular vehicle manufacturer, decided they were going to do something drastic to entice people to walk up the stairs instead of taking a ride.

They came up with a truly brilliant solution. They call it the “fun theory.” This theory tests what people do when they are faced with a dilemma. To test this particular theory, the company found a public transportation system located in Odenplan, Stockholm. Thousands of people exit here all day long. They are given the choice of taking the stairs or an escalator. Most select the escalator.

The group from the manufacturer waited until it was late at night to tape up the stairs. They came in and put down electronic panels over the concrete steps that looked just like the white keys that you find on a piano. They then added black keys. The result- a stairwell piano!

The next day, the company recorded the various reactions of hundreds of travelers. They had the choice of the stairs or the escalator, as usual. The reaction to the staircase was interesting. For example, one couple went towards the escalator and then switched direction to walk up the stairs instead.

It was very interesting to see how many people actually chose the stairs this time. Even older people, who many would think would still choose to ride, were eager to try out the stairs that looked like a piano.

Many of the men and women caught on film didn’t just walk up the stairs. Instead, they pretended like they were using their feet to play the imaginary piano. It was amazing to see the difference in people when they were faced with something different!

The video also stated that 66% more people picked the stairs over the escalator after the fake piano steps were put down. That is an amazing number!
