A Shocking Viral Video Leads To Grandmother's Arrest

Being a grandmother is the light of many women's lives. They take great joy in caring for and showing love to the next generation, often with great pride. Unfortunately for these grandchildren, their grandmother is not that type of woman.

Leimome Cheeks, age 62, was arrested in Memphis, Tennessee, after a video of her taking her grandchildren, ages seven and eight, out of dog crates stowed in the trunk of her car went viral. A good Samaritan captured the video and shared it on social media, leading to Cheek being arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment.

The reporters at WREG stated that the children were in the kennels because the back seat of the SUV was full. Displaying incomprehensible and cruel thought patterns, Cheek decided that her grandchildren should sit where she usually kept her two German Shepherd puppies--crated in the trunk. The children were there for over half an hour as their grandmother drove from Whitehaven to Collierville.

The two young children told the police that they were overheating in the trunk, as there were no vents in the kennels. On the day the event occurred, the temperature climbed to 95 degrees. Cheek's neighbors expressed their shock and sorrow to WREG, saying that she is normally a very nice lady with a strong faith in God. Many also speculate that there is a racial element here, as Cheek is white and her grandchildren are African American. 

This harrowing story is a good time to remember the guidelines of child safety in vehicles. Improper restraints and high temperatures can easily lead to injury or even death.
