We keep dogs on leashes to ensure their safety. But sometimes, the leash can be the cause of the danger. That's what happened to this poor girl and her Pomeranian during a fateful elevator ride where the leash was caught in the door.

It was a normal day when Johnny Mathis stepped out of the elevator in his apartment building. One of his neighbors - a girl who he hadn't met before - stepped into the elevator as he left.

Unfortunately, the girl's dog didn't make it inside. The Pomeranian was walking as fast as she could, but the doors closed right in the dog's face.

The elevator started to rise, and so did the poor dog's leash. If help hadn't arrived immediately, the situation could have been a tragedy.

Johnny Mathis recalls hearing the girl start screaming, according to CNN. He immediately turned around and ran back to the elevator.

With barely any time to asses the situation, Johnny immediately grabbed the dog and tried to remove the leash. The elevator was pulling the dog into the air, and Johnny had to fight to maintain control. The owner, who couldn't see that Johnny was there to help, continued to scream the entire time.

One tense minute later, Johnny unclipped the leash and set the dog free. The owner came straight back down to collect the terrified pup.

Johnny has been called a hero by on social media reports The Daily Mail, and that's because he is one. The screams scared him, but he turned his fear into action and saved a little dog's life. If he hadn't acted, the dog could have been strangled on her own collar.

Mathis was happy he was there to help and said this could have happened to anyone to CNN -- a perfect example of being in the right place at the right time.

You can prevent this from happening to your dog by watching them closely around elevators, escalators, and automatic doors. Always check that your pet is with you before the doors close. Pick up small pets before crossing automatic thresholds.

This situation was terrifying; it's a good thing Johnny Mathis was there. Do you think you would have reacted this quickly? Let us know if you've been in a similar situation; we'd love to hear about it.
