A police officer in Florida rescued a stray dog at the very end of a long day. He took her straight to an animal welfare center, but instead of going straight home, he waited until he knew the little pooch would be okay.

The officer, whose name is Kareem Garibaldi, found the puppy on a neighborhood patrol one day in the city of Lakeland. He was in the patrol car and had to swerve to avoid a ball of fur that ran into the road. Upon further inspection, he saw it was a small dog with no identification and was able to scoop her up and into the car.

Inside Edition reports that he searched and searched for the pup's owners but with no luck. Officer Garibaldi then drove the puppy to the SPCA to get vet help for the puppy, and it was there where a staff member snapped a photo of the two new friends napping together.

The officer had just come off of his third 12-hour shift, and in spite of his heavy eyelids, he stayed with the dog until she had a thorough check-up. Later on that same day, the pup found her new forever home, thanks to the hard work of one police officer who didn't want to abandon her.
