A Look Back on ‘1000-Lb. Sisters’ Icon Tammy Slaton’s Transformation Journey

Long before reality television changed her life, Tammy Slaton already believed she was meant for something more. Growing up in rural Kentucky, she and her sister Amy shared a childhood shaped by hardship, but also by a stubborn belief that their story would not end where it began. On an episode of Ezell Film Company’s 'Creative Chaos' podcast, Tammy recalled: “At 3 or 4 years old, (I) was telling Amy that me and her were going to be different,” she continued, “We were going to be the ones to make it on TV, make a name for ourselves.”
That confidence was forged early, even as their circumstances were anything but easy. Raised by their mother, Darlene, alongside siblings Chris, Misty, and Amanda, the Slatons grew up with very little. “We grew up very poor,” Amy said during the premiere of “1000-Lb. Sisters” in 2020. She explained: “There were five kids, so our mom worked three jobs. We didn’t really get much love and affection growing up. It was actually quite the opposite. We got told we were stupid, we were lazy.”
Amid that instability, Tammy and Amy found comfort in their grandmother, who became a rare source of warmth and encouragement. Tammy shared: “My grandma was so important to me. She made me feel like I was no different from anybody else.” When their grandmother died while they were still children, that loss left a deep mark: “After my grandma died, food was the only enjoyment we had.”
As the sisters grew older, food became both a coping mechanism and a burden. Tammy was bullied relentlessly at school. By her early twenties, her weight had climbed dramatically. It was the beginning of a long, painful journey that would eventually unfold before millions.
The turning point came in 2014, after a serious health scare forced Tammy to confront just how fragile her situation had become. She told PEOPLE in 2023:
“I had just got out of the hospital. I found out I had a blood clot in my right lung, and I was bored. I was just sitting there watching YouTube videos. I was like, ‘Why not? We’re funny, whatever. Why can’t we do it too?’”
Together, Tammy and Amy began vlogging, never imagining how far it would go. Their videos eventually caught the attention of TLC executives. When “1000-Lb. Sisters” premiered on Jan. 1, 2020, it marked the start of a public transformation that would span years. At her heaviest, Tammy weighed 725 pounds. Through rehabilitation, lifestyle changes, bariatric surgery in 2022, and later skin removal surgery, she has since lost more than 500 pounds. She sees that visibility as a responsibility.
Tammy has since lost 1,000 pounds. She has been very active on Instagram, sharing more photos of herself, feeling good, and embracing her journey toward a better, more confident self. In 2023, she shared a photo of herself in front of a mirror, wearing a floral summer dress. In the same month, she posted a photo of herself with her brother Chris Combs and YouTuber Chelcie Lynn. Sadly, in June 2023, a heartbroken Tammy announced the death of her boyfriend. However, that has not stopped the reality TV star from sharing more photos over the years.
She became more confident in her body, sharing more photos and videos of herself enjoying herself. In 2025, she penned a heartfelt letter to her supporters on TikTok, saying:
“So much as changed about me over the years i couldn’t be more thankful and blessed to have the support and love not only from my fans/besties but my girlfriend and ofc my family this is my thank you for helping me keep going!!”
