A Chance Encounter Between a Police Officer & a Widow Became a Life-Changing Turning Point

Sometimes help arrives in the most ordinary moments. For Rhea Holmes, it came on a cold December day in Syracuse, when she was struggling up a hill with a box of groceries, and a police officer decided to pull over.
On Dec. 13, 2025, Officer Jamie Pastorello was sitting in his patrol car when he spotted Holmes, 55, walking slowly up the hill. Pastorello told TODAY: “I thought, ‘I’ve got to go give this lady a ride.’” It looked like a small act. Holmes accepted the offer and climbed into the car, explaining that she was headed to a nearby cemetery to visit her husband’s grave.
During the short drive, Holmes spoke about her 26-year marriage, her faith, and how much her husband meant to her. She thanked Pastorello repeatedly for stopping. Before she got out of the car, she asked if they could take a photo together.
A few days before Christmas, the Syracuse Police Department shared that image on Facebook, describing it as a “simple act of kindness” during the holidays. What no one knew at the time was that Holmes had been living in that cemetery for months.
The post eventually reached a maintenance worker at the cemetery, who recognized Holmes immediately. He contacted authorities and said he had seen her there regularly since the summer. He believed she was sleeping in the cemetery, often near her husband’s grave. When Pastorello learned this, he was stunned. He stated, “We deal with homelessness every day,” then added, “She had no signs whatsoever.”
Holmes had been quietly surviving on her own for about eight months, sleeping on a tarp laid across her husband’s grave, storing a few groceries nearby, and wearing the same clothes day after day. She told the outlet, “I never imagined I’d be in that situation,” then added, “Not in a million years.”
Before homelessness became her reality, Holmes lived a very different life. She worked as an administrative assistant, and her husband, Rev. Eddie Holmes, was a minister, musician, and security guard. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 2020 at age 69, and the loss changed everything. Overwhelmed by grief, Holmes eventually lost her job and was evicted from her home. She avoided shelters because she felt safer on her own.
Even through Syracuse winters, she slept outdoors, often in the cemetery near the graves of both her husband and her father. She relied on nearby campus bathrooms to maintain basic hygiene and did her best to remain unnoticed. She stated, “I never asked for help,” then added:
“I didn’t want to be a burden.”
Despite her circumstances, Holmes continued to give. She volunteered at food pantries and churches whenever she could. She told TODAY, “I just kept giving to others,” and added, “It was the only way I could keep going.” Her faith sustained her, and she believes it also led her to that chance encounter with Pastorello: “God put Jamie there,” she then said: “He knew I needed help, and He guided me to him.”
Once Pastorello understood the full scope of Holmes’ situation, he acted quickly. He helped secure temporary housing and started a GoFundMe that has since raised more than $77,000. Pastorello stated, “Rhea, you’re not going to sleep outside again,” he then told her, “I’m not going to let that happen.” On Jan. 5, 2026, Holmes moved into a fully furnished home through a local organization that provides housing for people in need.
As temperatures plunged below freezing during recent snowstorms, she was safe indoors. “I know I wouldn’t have made it,” she declared, then added, “If that ride hadn’t happened when it did … I don’t even want to imagine.” More than a month later, Holmes and Pastorello remain close. They talk nearly every day and often meet for coffee. Pastorello told the news outlet:
“Sometimes, it’s just about showing up. A simple act at the right time can change everything.”
