"Mary Did You Know" is a modern-day Christmas song that is sure to become a classic, sung for generations to come. It was written by Mark Lowry in 1984 and first recorded in 1991 by Michael English. The song has been covered by many groups over the years, but the haunting rendition by the a cappella group Pentatonix is like no other.

It took Mark Lowry seven years to perfect the lyrics to this song. The idea first came to Lowry when he was working on a Christmas show for Jerry Fallwell. He started to think about what Mary must have felt and thought when an angel told her she was going to give birth to God's son, as reported here at Songfacts.com. He came up with some questions she may have asked or wanted to ask, and these eventually became the lyrics to this beloved song that has touched so many hearts. Once you hear Pentatonix's cover, your heart will be touched as well.

The lyrics involve asking Mary if she knew of the many incredible feats performed by Jesus, such as bringing sight to a blind man and going on to rule entire nations.

Pentatonix is an a cappella group originally from Texas. It is composed of five vocalists, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee. The group formed in 2011 and produces covers of pop and Christmas songs. In 2015, they released their album Pentatonix comprised of original material instead of covers. Their "Mary Did You Know?" cover is the sixth track on their second Christmas album, That's Christmas to Me.
