94-Year-Old Cicely Tyson Says She Will Never Retire And We Totally Believe Her

May 08, 2019 by apost team

Cicely Tyson has come a long way since her birth in the Harlem section of New York in 1933. At 94 she is resolved never to retire. There is no reason not to believe her. The fact is that she is an artist, an extraordinarily talented actress, in this case.

The most talented artists, whether they be musicians, singers, photographers, painters, writers, or of any of the professions requiring innate abilities that can be developed, but not really learned without raw, inbred talent probably very rarely retire. It's just part of who they are.

Acting Career Highlights

Tyson began her television acting career in 1951 in the NBC series, "Frontiers of Faith." The show had a long run until its final episode in 1970. Hollywood was next. In 1972 she won the Golden Globe award for her performance as best actress in the Oscar-nominated film, Sounder.

In 1974, Cicely Tyson won two Emmy Awards for her performance in "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman". Most recently she has starred in yet another Oscar-nominated film, "The Help." She continues to make recurring appearances on ABC's "How to Get Away with Murder".

Commendations and Other Life Highlights

In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded Cicely Tyson the coveted civilian award, The Presidential Medal of Freedom. As recent as last year she won an honorary Oscar Award. It was a first for an African-American woman to receive the award.

Before her television career, Cicely Tyson was a fashion model. She made the covers of both Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. It was during that period when she was discovered. She also acted in 4 Broadway plays, and won a Tony Award for Best Actress in the play, "The Trip to Bountiful".

Marriage

Cicely was married to the legendary jazz musician, Miles Davis. This was her only marriage, and it was late in life. Cicely was 57 at the time. They had no children. The marriage was a fairly rocky one.

In an interview with CNN, she described her relationship with him as "tumultuous." They were married for approximately 7 years before Cicely filed for divorce.

The reasons Cicely Tyson herself gives for not ever retiring are highlighted in her interview with Time Magazine this past February.

She said:

"The reason why I have been in this universe as long as I have been is because he’s not ready for me. When I’ve completed my job, he’ll take me away."
