Sam was a 13-year-old German Shepherd dog facing an impending death sentence – when a 93-year-old war veteran showed up to save the day once again!

Raised by a young man who joined the Navy, Sam was left homeless when his owner was deployed. With nowhere to send the beloved dog, Sam ended up in the animal shelter. As an older dog, the possibility of finding a home was unlikely and shelter workers found themselves counting down the days until Sam had to be euthanized. But that was when a miracle happened!

George Johnson had been looking for an older dog to adopt and received a phone call from the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County just before Sam was about to be put down. The 93-year-old Navy veteran had been searching for a dog since he lost his own beloved furry friend. Although he had been in contact with shelters, no one had a match that would be what he wanted. Unlike the rest of the world, George wanted a senior pet.

As soon as George heard about Sam and the story about his owner joining the Navy, George knew that they were meant to be together. Saving the day once again, this three-time war hero came to give Sam a new home where he would receive all the love he needed.

As he was being interviewed about the adoption, George laughed and said that he and Sam are alike since they are both “two old dogs”. He went on to say that the two of them are going to hang in there together for as long as they can.

When George and Sam finalized the adoption, George shared his story with the Petco Foundation and KABC. The response was overwhelming! George and Sam were able to celebrate their new life together around a cake, Sam was given a shopping spree, and the Petco Foundation awarded the German Shepherd Rescue group with $25,000!

Watching the video of George and Sam, you can see the camaraderie and love that they share for each other already! We’re sure that Sam’s original owner is thrilled that his old faithful dog gets to continue to live a good life. Maybe now Sam and George can help one another.
