93-Year-Old Trapped In Wreckage For 8 Hours Until His Car Is Found In The Woods

Most car accidents are immediately noticed and even cause rubbernecking on the road as other curious motorists pause to check out scene. This was unfortunately not the case when a 93-year-old man was involved in a car accident in February that left him trapped in his car for hours.

The driver, Carl Keown, had gone out for a pleasure ride late in the afternoon near his hometown of Jeffersonville, Indiana. His drive took a detour when his car spun off the road and down an embankment before hitting a tree.

With the incline of the hill and the heavy foliage, Carl’s car was not very visible from the road. More than that, Carl was trapped in the car and was unable to walk up the hill to flag down someone to help. As the hours passed and the sky grew dark, the temperature plunged.

The situation looked truly bleak for Carl, but thankfully he decided to keep his hazard lights on. Even though his car was barely visible from the road, a passerby finally saw the dim and partially-concealed lights.

Andrew Koehler got out of his car at close to midnight and several long hours after Carl’s car had plunged down the hill. When he realized what he was looking at, he immediately called for help.

Authorities had to climb down the hill in the dark and trudge through thick foliage to reach the car. When they did, more than eight hours had passed since the time Carl’s car sailed down the hill. However, he was still sitting behind the steering wheel and was so grateful to finally be rescued.

When his daughter was contacted by LEX 18 News shortly after the rescue, she stated that it was a miracle that he was found. More than that, she proclaimed that he had a guardian angel looking out for him and expressed gratitude for Andrew Koehler's valiant assistance.

The Sherrif's office wrote a post on Facebook on February 8th Stating:

“Community and Emergency Services work together resulting in a positive outcome in an accident involving 93-year-old man!”

they went on to say:

"All of us, including Mr. Keown’s daughter Terri, are extremely grateful to Andrew Koehler for following his instinct, acting as a Good Samaritan, and possibly saving Mr. Keown’s life!"
