Riding a bicycle is something 92-year-old Rosemary Sorce of Boise, Idaho has enjoyed doing during her entire life. She refuses to let her age keep her from going bike riding. A cargo-style bicycle was built for her by her own family. They call it a blessing bike. It was designed so it could carry Rosemary.

No Pedaling Required

This design makes it possible for her to enjoy traveling around on a bicycle without the need to pedal it. On the back of the bike is the working portion of the bicycle. It is where someone is in charge of doing the pedaling. This design makes it possible for Rosemary to sit in the front and enjoy the bicycle ride. Jill Houser is Rosemary’s daughter. She got the idea to build a blessing bike after seeing a video online.

Jill remembers seeing the video circulating on Facebook. It gave her all the inspiration she needed to build a blessing bike for her mother. Jill was on Facebook when she saw the video from Copenhagen and it caught her attention. It showed how a volunteer built a bicycle designed to take seniors around. As she was watching the video, Jill saw the happy expressions on the faces of those seniors. She then looked at her mother sitting on the couch.

Jill would regularly take her mother out in a wheelchair. She then asked her husband if he could build something like the blessing bike featured in the video from Copenhagen. He looked at Jill and said he believed he could make such a bicycle.

92nd Birthday Gift

Jill and her husband began their blessing bike project by searching Craigslist for a cargo bike. They found one and after purchasing it, they repainted the bicycle and did some modifications. When it was complete, the bicycle appeared to be like the cargo-style bicycle on the video from Copenhagen.

It was then given to Rosemary as a gift on her 92nd birthday. She was very happy to get it. Rosemary told people she is 92 and wants to keep going. She would also tell people to look at the sky and tell them you are not able to see all this from a car.

Huge Hit

Rosemary and her family felt the blessing bike was a huge hit. The bicycle is also very popular wherever it goes. People really enjoy seeing a woman getting around on a bicycle at 92-years old.

They had an experience where a man stopped them on the street. He drove to a parking lot, got out of his car, and physically stopped them on the road. The man began crying and told them he wished he had been able to provide such an experience for his mother. He asked them how do build such a bike and what needs to be done.

Jill tells people the blessing bike experience is not just about her and her mother. It is an example of what people can do for their elderly family members. The blessing bike is a way they can provide elderly loved ones with a wonderful experience.
