The bond people form with their pets can be very strong. But thousands of pets live in shelters waiting to find their forever homes each day. To battle this problem, a young boy in Russia has come up with a unique way to raise money to care for homeless pets. Pavel Abramov, who is 9 years old, uses his amazing artistic talent to create pet portraits that he then trades for needed animal care supplies.

Pavel’s mother, Ekaterina Bolshakova, said to Bored Panda that his interest in helping homeless pets began shortly after the death of his pet dog named Barsik. She says that losing Barsik made Pavel more aware of the plight of animals without a loving home. That is when he and his mom came up with the idea of Pavel creating pet portraits and getting paid with pet supplies instead of money.

Pavel has named his effort “Kind Paintbrush," and his amazing animal portraits are so popular, that he has even shipped them to customers in other countries. Pavel has traded his paintings for all kinds of animal supplies including cans of dog food, medication, pet collars, toys, and even beef trimmings.

Pavel also features his volunteer efforts on a site he and his mom started to encourage other young volunteers to create their own projects to give back to their communities. In addition to painting animal portraits, Pavel also volunteers at the local animal shelter. Pavel’s mom said to Bored Panda that his many pet-centered activities keep him so busy, he has little time for anything else.
