9-Year-Old Fashion Designer Grabs Attention Of Vera Wang And More With Her Creations

Every child dreams of what they want to be when they grow up. Some children dream of being a teacher or a firefighter, but it’s not every day a child dreams of being a fashion designer. One little girl, Kaia Aragon from Colorado, has dreamt of making her own clothes even before she could dress. When picking her own outfits, she was drawn to dressing herself so that she would stand out. After dressing confidently, Kaia started to design her own clothes in November of 2021. 

The young designer started to share her unique and beautiful designs and passion on the internet via her Instagram and Tiktok platforms. Her Instagram account has over 5,000 followers, and her Tiktok account, which she shares with her mom, has 10,000 followers. Kaia’s hard work and creative drive paid off when an iconic fashion designer noticed Kaia and her work. 

In February 2022, the young designer caught the attention of Vera Wang. A legendary fashion designer who has been working in the business for several years. Wang sent Kaia a handwritten note, a backpack, and a sewing machine for her to continue to work. The handwritten note has since been framed and sits on Kaia’s bedroom wall, where she can turn to it for inspiration. 

The young fashion designer has her eyes set on big accomplishments in this world. Her dream would be to design a dress for the award-winning actress, Zendaya. However, in the meantime, Kaia is more than happy designing and dressing for her family and friends. 

In an interview with Insider in April of 2022, Kaia shared that it all started as early as when she could dress. "Whenever I could get myself dressed, I would always pick out outfits that would stand out or make a statement," she said. 

Learning her skills from her mom, Tonya, her mother shared that Kaia quickly surpassed her skills. "Her skills and her ideas are quickly surpassing what I'm able to do," the proud mother shared. 

If Kaia isn’t at her sewing machine, she’s watching skills on Youtube. Kaia puts a lot of effort into picking her designs and materials to work with. "All the fabrics I pick are soft and stretchy. If there's a fabric that I think is pretty but it's not comfortable, then I won't get it. It's just based on the feel and then the looks,” she said. Her dedication to her craft grabbed the attention of international designers who applauded the young star for going after her dreams. 

In the handwritten note that Kaia received from fashion designer Wang she wrote, “Dearest Kaia, So excited to see you are already pursuing your dream of becoming a fashion designer! Congratulations and all good luck. Love Vera." Wang isn’t the only person to send Kaia gifts. The Los Angeles College sent Kaia fabric for the design. They also sent a video from “Project Runway” contestant, Nick Verreos, asking for Kaia to design an Olympic figure skating outfit. 

Kaia’s hopes and dreams for designing aren’t far out of reach with her young success. "When I grow up, I'm hoping to have a big fashion business in Paris with my best friend, and we want to go to school at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising,” Kaia said.
