9 Natural Methods To Cleanse Your Lungs

Jan 28, 2019 by apost team

Our lungs deliver us oxygen, expel carbon dioxide and filter out many different particulates and contaminants. Nevertheless, many people deal with a persistent coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain and many other lung-related symptoms. While these can be signs of more serious problems—and should be followed up on with a physician—they’re often symptoms of poor lung care. With that in mind, here are nine techniques that you can employ to improve lung health.

9. Avoid Pollution

This can be a tough one depending on where you live. There are filters that you can wear outdoors that are inexpensive and use activated carbon. If you’d like invest in a higher degree of protection, there are particulate filter masks that you can where that will block almost all harmful agents.

8. Employ Acupressure

Did you know that there are pressure points on your body that can relieve you of a wide range of breathing troubles? Perhaps the easiest to access is at the base of your thumb. Use the thumb, on one hand, to apply this pressure to the other for about three minutes.

7. Eat a Proper Diet

A balanced diet is important for your overall health. It also ensures that your lungs get the vitamins and minerals needed to build strength and capacity and stave off potential problems.

  • Organic diets can lower your risk of bronchitis, cancer and much more.
  • Avoid foods with additives and preservatives.
  • Drink ample water in order to keep your lungs hydrated.
  • Smokers should quit, but in the meantime, they should avoid beta-carotene supplements due to increased risk of cancer.

6. Buddy Up to Loosen Phlegm

While on your hands and knees, have a partner gently tap your back using a cup shape for his or her hand. Start at the upper-middle, and cough as soon as you feel the urge.

5. Feel Free to Cough

Coughing is a natural way of clearing your lungs so go for it. If a cough persists, see a doctor rather than suppressing it.

4. Maintain a Tidy Home

Lung inflammation can be caused by excessive dust as well as even mild exposure to mold. It can trigger allergies, asthma and even inflammation. Couple a clean home with air purifiers in the places you like to relax in order to ensure the easiest breathing possible.

3. Focus on Proper Breathing

Many people don’t have an ideal breathing pattern, and that has a direct effect on the strength of your lungs, how you feel and how healthy you actually are overall.

Breathing exercises are a great way to increase oxygen to your lungs and—more importantly—release carbon dioxide. Better yet, the more you practice, the more these techniques become your norm.

Diaphragmatic Breathing:

  • Step 1: Lie flat on your back.
  • Step 2: Breathe through your nose by pushing your belly out for 2-3 seconds.
  • Step 3: Purse your lips. Gently press your belly as you breathe out slowly for 3-4 seconds.
  • Step 4: Continue this process for five minutes.

Diaphragmatic breathing has become much more common since it’s now known to increase lung capacity and strength.

Pursed-Lip Breathing:

  • Step 1: Use your nose to breathe in deeply for 2-3 seconds.
  • Step 2: Purse your lips. Exhale deeply counting to at least four and as high as nine.

PLB breathing is often recommended to manage both anxiety and asthma attacks.

Anulom-Vilom Pranayama:

This a yoga breathing technique in which you begin in the lotus position. Your hands should be on your knees, and your palms should face the sky.

  • Step 1: Close a nostril with one thumb. Breathe deeply.
  • Step 2: Close the other nostril and exhale.
  • Step 3: Switch and repeat the process.
  • Step 4: Continue this for at least three minutes. Experienced practitioners will employ this technique for as long as 20 minutes.

Humming Breathing:

  • Step 1. Breathe deeply through your nose.
  • Step 2. As you exhale, make a humming sound.

Humming breathing not only increases oxygen to your lungs but makes your diaphragm stronger.

2. Sleep with Your Head Elevated

Experts recommend that your head is at 15 degrees. This can be difficult for people prone to other positions, but with a little effort, it can become a habit in weeks or even less. In addition to mucus drainage, it’s great for your shoulders and back.

1. Perform Basic Exercises

Exercise is great for lung capacity and strength as well as to increase blood flow and to help essential vitamins and minerals reach your lungs. These exercises don’t have to be intense to be effective.

Chinese Exercise:

  • Step 1: Sit on a chair or the floor.
  • Step 2: Inhale as you lift your arms until they extend before you. Exhale.
  • Step 3: Inhale as you move your arms to your side at shoulder level. Exhale.
  • Step 4: Inhale as you lift your arms high above your head. Exhale.
