As human beings, we naturally crave interaction with other people. Human beings need that interaction on a day-to-day basis to simply express themselves and to have a sense of purpose.

Isolation from other people and the outside world can truly lead people to do very crazy things. Just ask Ian Hemmens.

Ian Hemmens is 81 years old. He was incredibly lonely and he somehow decided that he would become a getaway driver for a local drug kingpin and dealer in order to have some kind of human interaction on a daily basis.

According to the BBC, Ian Hemmens even helped the drug dealer he was driving for fleeing in his vehicle after the dealer stabbed a rival dealer. During the trial of the dealer and Mr. Hemmens for the stabbing, the prosecutor trying the case described the stabbing as a “potentially fatal” incident. Mr. Hemmens was named as an accomplice.

Mr. Hemmens will be alone no more as he had been sentenced to prison. He will be sent to Portsmouth Crown Court where he will serve nine months in general population. The drug dealer, Akeem Adebayo, who is just 23 years old, was sentenced to nine years.

He was found possessing both heroin and cocaine and the amount earned him a sentence of intent to supply the drugs. Another dealer, Muhamud Sami, was also on the scene and Mr. Hemmens helped him flee as well, contributing to the nine months prison time that Hemmens was sentenced to.

Hemmens is a retired burger van worker. He drives a green Citroen C3, the vehicle used to help the two drug dealers flee from Chichester all the way to Bognor. The event itself happened on March 10th. Adebayo and Sami were selling heroin and cocaine to Dimitrijs Semelis when a fight broke out between the two parties. A

According to the prosecutor, Amy Packham, Adebayo proceeded to hold Semelis down so he couldn’t fight back while Sami stabbed him repeatedly.
