80-Year-Old Retiree Receives Makeover Which Transforms Her Look And Life

At one point or another in our lives, most of us have probably wanted to do something to change our appearance. Whether it’s getting a new haircut, trying out the latest makeup trend or wearing brand new clothes, transforming a look can be powerful. It can even be life-changing for some people. A reason why makeovers are so effective and why so many people opt to change up their looks is because it’s never too late to try something new and to reinvent yourself.

Christopher Hopkins is best known for being The Makeover Guy. He’s a professional when it comes to finding new ways to help bring out the natural beauty in his clients no matter how old or young they may be. He’s able to see something special in each and every one of them and finds a way to showcase their inner star and individuality through a new look. Hopkins has been The Makeover Guy for quite some time now and has heard plenty of incredible life stories along the way from his many clients, including Carol Bales.

Bales is an 80-year-old woman who wanted to get a makeover because she was ready to finally feel special. Originally from California, she now lives in Maryland and is retired from working in the science and medical field. She had a traumatic childhood and spent the majority of her life taking care of others before finally realizing that it was time to take care of herself. In May 2021, all of her dreams came true when she received a life-changing makeover.

Before she had her life-changing makeover, Bales told Hopkins her story. It’s safe to say that this woman has been through a lot and was in dire need of a pick-me-up. She grew up feeling unsafe at home, especially around her father who struggled with his own personal demons. Bales was always looking out for others in hopes that someone would look out for her, but it never seemed like anyone was coming to save her. As a child, she never even played because she didn’t want to show people just how sad she really was.

Bales studied to become a cytotechnologist — someone who studies cells — and was highly well-known and respected in her field. She explained that she was known internationally for about 25 to 30 years. Although it seemed like her life had turned for the better, Bales still had her personal struggles. As she grew older, it was still hard for her to develop relationships with others, especially men, so she decided to have a baby on her own at the age of 40 by donor insemination. 

Bales said she finally felt “emotionally healthy” after having her son, but she still didn’t have time to be in a relationship. Bales switched careers to help care for patients with AIDS and worked in hospitals for 25 years. “I retired, my son moved to Maryland, and I found that for the first time in my life, I didn’t have anybody to take care of,” Bales said. She finally realized that it was time to take care of herself. It was time for Bales to get the makeover of her dreams.

Hopkins performed a full analysis of Bales’ features to figure out what makeover style would suit her best. He found that cool, clear and bright colors worked best with her complexion, and he got to work making Bales look like the star she was always meant to be. Prior to her makeover, Bales didn’t spend much time on her appearance. She had fringy hair, asymmetrical features and a muted sense of style. There was a sparkle in her eyes, though, that Hopkins needed to figure out how to bring out.

The makeover Bales received completely changed her appearance. She looked fresher, younger, brighter and, most importantly, happier. “Well, I have to say it was wonderful and I feel stunning, unique and playful,” Bales said after receiving her transformative makeover. When she looked in the mirror, she was shocked at the reflection staring back. Bales explained that she had missed a lot growing up — she never went to the prom, she never got married and people typically forgot about her birthday. Finally, she had an experience where she was the center of attention.

Prior to her makeover, Bales revealed that she never felt special. “It’s not a haircut, and it’s not just a makeover … It’s a life-fulfilling dream,” she said. After receiving her makeover, it was clear that Bales finally felt appreciated, beautiful and special. She even held her head up a bit higher, proudly showing off her newfound confidence. It’s clear that the makeover not only changed her appearance but her life as well.
