Queen Elizabeth II was the reigning monarch of England for an incredible 70 years, but sadly her time came to an end when she passed away on Sept. 8, 2022. She passed away while at her home in Balmoral after Buckingham Palace had earlier announced that she was under medical attention.

Despite making it to an incredible 96 years of age, the queen proved there was no slowing her down. 2022 was a big year for her after she celebrated 70 years as queen of the United Kingdom and 15 Commonwealth realms in February 2022. This was not only a milestone for her but for the entire world, as she was the first British ruling monarch to reach the seven-decade mark.

Her late Majesty was very beloved. She was seen as a role model to many people all over the world, including a young 8-year-old named Olivia Akers from Tallygaroonpa. Olivia had dressed as the late queen for a horse show and fancy dress competition and sent the picture to Queen Elizabeth II even though she did not win the competition. After losing the competition, Olivia sent the photos and letter to Buckingham Palace back in June and patiently waited every day for a response. Months later, upon hearing that Queen Elizabeth II had passed away, the Akers family was heartbroken. However, later that day, the family and Olivia received something unexpected in the mail waiting for them at the local post office.

Receiving a one-of-a-kind letter from Balmoral Castle, the whole family was touched to hear about the late queen’s response to Olivia dressing up as her.

According to ABC.Net, in her letter to the queen, Olivia said, “Dear Queen Elizabeth, my name is Olivia Akers, I am 8 years old and live in Tallygaroopna in Australia.” She went on to say, “I really liked your video with Paddington Bear. Do you really eat marmalade sandwiches? I have included some photos from an online horse fancy dress competition that was for your Platinum Jubilee.”

On Friday, Sept. 8, 2022, the Akers family was shocked when their mail woman said they had a special delivery. "The lady at the post office says, 'You've got a very special piece of mail today,'" Olivia's mom said. "We had a bit of a greeting card for the Queen's Jubilee thanking her for the letter, and then a personalized message from the Queen's lady-in-waiting acknowledging Liv sitting there on her 'splendid' pony," Olivia’s mom said.

The letter of response, in part, said, "Her Majesty was touched to know that you too enjoy horse riding, and I am to thank you again for your thoughtfulness in writing to the Queen as you did at this time.”

The family said how special of a moment it was, considering that the Queen had passed away the same day they received it. "We all got a little bit teary to have such a special letter arrive and it's probably one of her last letters that she would have written," she said. Olivia’s mom noted that the moment and the letter were "just beautiful.” "I'm sure Olivia will treasure that letter for the rest of her life," her mom added.
