8 DISGUSTING Habits You Never Knew Were Actually GOOD For You

Jul 16, 2018 by apost team

Things that make you say, “Eww! How gross! That’s disgusting!” Bad habits, like those trouble-causing, rude or smelly ones that got you into trouble as a kid, are hard to break. Some are natural bodily functions that cannot be helped. Others are considered germy public nuances, crude or just plain lazy. Nevertheless, not all of our disgusting habits are bad. Here are some seemingly gross habits that are good for your health.

1. Peeing in the Shower

Admit it. You have peed in the shower. Everyone has done it at some point. In fact, a TODAY show poll showed that 75% of people polled have peed in the shower, and it’s ok. Urine is known to be sterile and can prevent foot fungus and athlete’s foot. Besides, peeing in the shower will save water (from all of those flushes) and money on the purchase of 2-ply.

2. Spitting

You’re walking down the sidewalk and someone spits in front you. How rude! It’s a public nuisance if you step in it, but for the runner, it helps with breathing. Working out produces excess saliva/mucus in the mouth that can affect your breathing. Spitting improves this. Go ahead and spit. Just be mindful of your surroundings.

3. Chewing Gum

There is no nutritional value in gum and some argue about the benefits it has on teeth gums. There is no argument, however, that gum chewing improves some brain functions. Studies show that it improves memory, reduces stress levels, helps concentration, and balances hormones by increasing cortisol levels.

4. Farting

Digestive gas, also known as farting, is a natural bodily function. It is necessary, normal and a healthy part of living. Up to six hours after eating and drinking, your digestive tract produces carbon dioxide and methane. Don't keep it in. Farting gets rid of it, eliminates bloating and abdominal pain caused by the gases.

5. Burping

Burping after a meal is absolutely normal. It releases excess air in the stomach (the same as farting). Burping excessively, however, may cause you to swallow too much air which causes gastric acid or acid reflux.

6. Biting Your Nails

While we don’t encourage putting your fingers in your mouth, there are health benefits to biting your fingernails. Biting your nails builds the immune system. It creates white blood cells that help to fight bacteria and infection. Biting your nails also helps to prevent allergies in kids and builds lymphocytes that help to fight off recurring bacteria in the body.

7. Picking Your Nose and Eating Boogers

Want to continue boosting your immune system? Studies show that eating boogers fights cavity-causing bacteria. When you eat the mucus, it prompts your immune system to release white blood cells from the body to protect itself.

8. Skipping Showers

A shower a day? Maybe not. When you take daily showers, you wash away the body’s essential oils that keep skin and hair hydrated. Even rinsing the body with hot water destroys healthy bacteria that restores the elasticity in the skin.
