History tells us that true love never dies. There are so many stories of couples and families who have shared how true love has the ability to rise above everything else. For anyone who is looking for evidence that the impossible is indeed possible when love asserts its power, there is the incredibly beautiful fairy-tale story of Leonard and Shirley Matties.

The story began way back in 1947 when a young couple decided to marry. At the time, both Leonard and Shirley were 19 years old. It's hard to believe that the couple are still married 72 years later. To accomplish such a feat, both the bride and groom have lived a life of devotion to one another, as reported here at CBS News.

The story continues as the couple was recently preparing to celebrate their 72 year wedding anniversary. As a tribute to what their parents have accomplished, their children decided to put on a memorable anniversary celebration. The couple still live together in a nursing facility located in Burlington, Colorado.

Through the efforts of Shirley's primary caretaker Ardis Behrendsen and her daughter Carolyn Martell, the task at hand was to make this a day worth remembering. That's exactly what happened. According to Behrendsen, “Working with the elderly has always been a huge passion to me. What I got to be a part of today was the most beautiful experience.”

The plan was simple. The parties involved decided to dress Shirley up in an incredibly beautiful pink gown. As they pushed her out into the recreation room to greet her groom, the vision caught Leonard's eye. What he saw was not the 91 year old wife he has been married to all these years. Clearly, the look on his face indicated he was taken back to a place many years ago when love was still in its infancy. He was seeing the beautiful woman whose hand he had decided to take in marriage.

Hopefully, this story has touched your heart the way it has touched the hearts of so many others who have read it. You might want to pass it along and make sure the people around you get the same chance.
