Being different is difficult for children. No one knows this better than 7-year-old Anu who lives in Shirley in the West Midlands, UK. Anu had to have her leg removed when she was just an infant, leaving her with limited mobility.

Despite the fact that she learned to navigate life with a prosthetic limb quickly, it didn’t provide her with the mobility that she needed to participate in sporting and recreational activities with her friends. For Anu, it was beginning to look like she would always be the odd one out. But that is when a miracle happened!

Anu was given the opportunity to get a custom prosthetic that, instead of being a fake leg, was a sports blade. Unlike traditional prosthetic limbs, the blade would give her the added mobility she needed to participate in activities such as running, dancing, and jumping with her friends.

And, best yet, the blade was pink – the perfect color!

While going to school presents kids with plenty of moments of social awkwardness and uncertainty, the morning that Anu first wore her new blade she was walking with confidence. She was so happy to have her new prosthetic and was anxious to show it off.

In a world where we hear about bullies far too often, the reaction of Anu’s friends was a welcome surprise!

Anu’s classmates begin to rush to her side, anxious to see her new leg and find out more about it. Instead of being scared or nervous about facing her prosthetic, they are excited to ask questions and learn more.

In a BBC video clip that captured the reaction of the other students, it's easy to overhear one of the kids ask Anu if that is her pink leg that she’s wearing. Another child shows her excitement by saying, “Wow!”.

One little girl was so excited that she ran forward to throw her arms around Anu, giving her a hug that shared in her joy.

As soon as the other students had taken a few minutes to inspect the new leg, they went right back to their regular playground activities, giving Anu the chance to be just another kid.

How does Anu like her new leg? She explains that she likes the prosthetic because it helps her to run faster and do better street dancing. We’re so glad that she has the opportunity to do everything alongside her classmates.
