7 Tips That Will Stop Telemarketers From Calling You For Good

Jul 12, 2018 by apost team

Almost everyone gets annoying robocalls and calls from telemarketers. Some of these calls are threatening and you will want to watch that you don’t get taken advantage of. Stop these calls for good by following these seven tricks.

1. Sign up for the Do Not Call Registry

Sign up your mobile and/or home phone with the FTC’s Do Not Call Registry. This registry will automatically block thousands of different numbers that are well-known scams and schemes. However, it can take at least a month for it to start working and some callers can still get through. Remember, debt collectors, charities, political groups, and surveys are not usually blocked by this list.

2. Ignore Unknown Numbers

Scammers are using more and more high-tech tricks to get people to pick up their calls. One of these tricks is to use a local area code in order to trick you into thinking it is someone you know. But if you don’t recognize the number, don’t pick up. Callers also tend to track their phone calls. When their calls go straight to your voicemail a number of times, this may be enough for them to take you off of their list. However, if you recognize a charity that you gave to previously or a business you frequented, you will probably need to answer the call and just ask them politely to stop.

3. Stay Quiet

If you answered your phone and realize that it is a spam caller, robocall, or telemarketer, simply hang up. Yes, it is tempting to argue or yell but that only tells them that someone is actually on the other end of the line. Whatever you say will be noted by callers as “callback information.”

Even pressing buttons when you get a robocall will tell them there is a chance someone will pick up, and they will try to reach you again later. Simply hang up and go about your day.

Many home phone providers give their customers a way to block small groups of phone numbers that call you regularly. Many scammers change the numbers they call from but if you block them, this sends a message that you are serious about being left alone. Cellphones are easier to block numbers from than your home line.

5. Download a Number-Blocking App

Even if you are on the Do Not Call Registry it doesn’t hurt to download certain types of cellphone apps. Hiya, Robokiller, YouMail, and Nomorobo are just four apps that will block numbers calling out of their huge databases of scam callers. Most of these apps offer a free trial. However, you may have to pay a small monthly or yearly fee to continue.

6 .Your Cell Phone Carrier Can Help

Talk to your cell phone provider about call-blocking services. You may be eligible for a free telemarketer blocking program or you may have to pay a small fee. But these types of programs will identify and block robocalls, spam, and telemarketers before they even get through.

Verizon's Caller Name ID, T-Mobile Scam ID and Scam Block, AT&T's Call Protect phone app, and Sprint Premium Caller ID are just a few of the main telemarketing blocking programs.

7. Put on Your Do Not Disturb Mode

This only works if you have a cell phone, but it is a tip that works very well. Setting your cell phone to the Do Not Disturb mode will block any call coming in unless you specifically set it to receive certain numbers from your contact list. Any unknown number will go straight to voicemail and you won’t even hear your phone ring.
