7 Survival Skills You Need in Case of Real Danger

Jul 18, 2018 by apost team

Hopefully this is the most extreme situation you ever find yourself in, but there may be disasters that occur that are completely beyond your control. While events may be beyond your control, there are things you can do to deal with stressful situations and keep you and your family safe. What must you know how to do in a survival situation?

1. Plan For Disaster

Knowing what to anticipate in your reality is essential for being able to plan for dangerous situations. You wouldn't plan for a volcano eruption if you didn't live in an area with the potential for that disaster; knowing what potential pitfalls your location could throw at you is key to being able to prepare your plan for survival.

2. Know Your Location...And Know How To Get Out

It is highly unlikely that you will find yourself in a situation in which you have a compass or a map to get yourself out. Having some basic knowledge of orientation and being able to assess the sun's position in the sky for direction and time will give you precious minutes of daylight that you can use to prepare shelter, find food, and build up your defenses.

3. Positive People Overcome Obstacles

In any survival situation, adopting a positive attitude will increase your ability to effectively create sustainable conditions for yourself and your family. A positive mental attitude even affects your strength and stress response, and it will give you a critical advantage over any conditions you may be facing. Hold onto thoughts of overcoming your situation and finding options for getting out of danger, and refuse to give up, no matter what obstacles might come your way. You will be more successful than any naysaying bystanders.

4. Know How To Find Water

No matter what your needs for water are---cleaning, disinfecting, bathing, or drinking, it is critical to your survival. Water is the single most important resource to obtain in a survival situation, as you will only live a few days without it. In a case where water is abundant but NOT clean enough to drink, having basic knowledge of how to construct a still will be essential to your survival.

5. Finding Food

Finding food will take priority after water, as you'll need to be able to replenish your energy. Having a bug out bag with survival items like energy bars, non-perishable foods, and other snacks will be something you'll need to prepare before a disaster occurs, so you can take these with you as you flee to safety. Having basic items like knives and fishing equipment will be helpful in case your prepared food supply runs low, and you find yourself having to hunt or scourage for food.

6. Making A Fire

In order to ensure that your fresh kill is edible, you'll need to know how to cook or prepare it. Making a fire from materials found in nature is time-consuming, but it is well worth the effort. Purchasing fire starters to have in bug out bags is helpful, but not always possible. Fire is not just for food preparation; it also provides light, heat, and protection from predators. It can dry clothes and provide comfort and security in an otherwise frightening situation. Gather information on the many options you have for creating fire in a disaster situation, and you will have a competitive edge over those that cannot.

7. Crossing Strong Current

If you are in a situation where you must travel over land to get to safety, it will be likely that you will have to deal with crossing bodies of water. Assess the current strength; is it passible for you and your whole family? If not, what materials are around you that can construct a makeshift raft or bridge apparatus? Are there ways to get around crossing altogether? How are you at swimming? Answering these questions accurately and honestly will allow you to stay safe in situations where navigating water is essential to your survival.

Although it is unlikely that you will be subject to an extreme survival situation, knowing these basic survival skills and having disaster plans and equipment will allow you to have peace of mind, no matter what may come your way. Pass this on to your friends and loved ones, so they know how to prepare for an emergency, too.
