7 Simple Ways To Figure Out That Someone Is Lying To You

Apr 03, 2018 by apost team

It isn’t always easy being able to tell who is telling the truth and who isn’t. According to The American Psychological Association, Americans tell around 11 lies every single week.

Are you constantly trying to figure you whether someone is lying to you or not?

Read on for seven simple ways you can tell yourself.

1. Untold Details

Someone telling the truth will include details of their stories because they perceived them in the situation they were in. But liars tend to leave specific details out. They won’t give an accurate account of the event in question, leading to inconsistencies in the story itself. They will also have trouble retelling the story without messing up the fine points.

2. Poor Eye Contact

Most people who are trying to get away with a lie will have poor eye contact with you when they are telling the story. While avoiding eye contact could mean a variety of things, it can definitely mean a lie if you are already doubting the story in question.

3. Short Emotional Outbursts

According to a study done at Dalhousie University by the Stephen Porter’s Forensic Psychology Lab, liars tend to have short emotional outbursts of true emotion when they are lying. When participants were asked to lie intentionally, they would experience very small movements in their facial expressions that they could not control.

4. Poor Memory

Liars frequently admitted having a poor memory, according to a publishing found in Psychology Today. When a person is telling the truth they generally have no problem remembering the story as it happens. For a liar, they will not remember their story exactly and may offer justifications as to why they can’t recall the event in question.

5. Pressed Lips

When someone is lying, they tend to keep their lips pressed tightly together, causing their faces to look forced and tense. Another clue is to watch the “eye-mouth” combo of a person who you may suspect is lying. If someone is really happy, they will smile using both their eyes and mouth. A fake expression can be seen when the mouth and eyes don’t “match” in their expressions.

6. Face Touching

A liar is more likely to repeatedly touch their face when they are talking to you. This is because it creates a sense of calmness to their minds. They usually don’t even realize they are doing so at the time. This has a calming effect on their brain when the brain is under the stress of a lie. Tapping hands and feet and being generally fidgety are also signs of a liar.

7. Lying Under Stress

Many people lie more when they are under stress. If the truth doesn’t seem to be making someone happy, people often start telling lies. Many lies are simply told to help gain a human connection between two people, so understanding the specific context of the situation may help decipher whether someone is lying or not. If they are embarrassed or upset, they could be lying to gain acceptance.
