At the shocking age of 67, a Chinese woman has claimed to be the world’s oldest mother to a newborn conceived naturally.

If her claims are verified, she will be the eldest woman to ever conceive without the assistance of fertility treatments.

On Friday, October 25, the retired lady, who goes by the surname Tian, gave birth to a 5.6-pound baby girl via cesarean section at Zaozhuang’s Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital.

Her 68-year-old husband surnamed Huang told the Chinese news site guancha.cn that the child was bestowed on the two of them by heaven, as cited by Al Jazeera. They have named the infant Tianci, which means a gift from heaven.

According to the Jinan Times, Tian claimed that she only discovered her pregnancy when she visited the hospital for a routine health check. She said, “I didn't want it, initially.”

The hospital cannot confirm Tian’s assertion that she conceived naturally because she was already expecting the child when she became their patient.

Tian and her husband already have two adult children and multiple grandchildren. If her claims of a natural conception are substantiated, she will beat the last record-holder by almost ten years in age.

Currently, it is Dawn Brooke, who became pregnant sans medical intervention at age 58, who holds the record. The oldest woman to ever give birth is reported to be a 74-year-old Indian woman who utilized IVF treatments to conceive her twin daughters.

China enforces a two-child policy, so it remains to be seen if Huang and Tian will be penalized for exceeding the limit. Up until 2016, a one-child policy was in effect in Beijing. The revised policy has prompted a growing number of older women to consider having a second child.

According to Al Jazeera, comments on China's social media platform Weibo have reflected criticism regarding the parents having a child at their age. Many believe it is unfair to bring a child into the world during one’s golden years. One person commented, “At their advanced age, they have no ability to take care of a kid, and the pressure will be on the older siblings.”
