Mongkol is an elderly elephant. At 61 years old, he's in his golden years. He lives in Thailand. Like many animals, he really responds well to music. Studies show that animals often respond very favorably to classical compositions. It seems to have a soothing effect. That's part of why Mongkol's human friend, Paul Barton, has made it a point to expose him to works by the likes of Beethoven.

A Concert for an Audience of One

Paul Barton is a skilled piano player. One night, he played a special concert for just one creature, namely, Mongkol. Luckily, there's footage of this. It proves that Mongkol really got a lot out of the one-man show. As Barton plays Beethoven's famous "Moonlight Sonata," the elephant begins to flap his ears, wag his tail and even swing his trunk a little bit. Mostly, Mongkol stands patiently and listens. It's evident that he's enjoying himself and wants to hear more. When the show is over, Barton gets up, rubs Mongkol's trunk, and gives him a kind of hug. There's a bond of respect between these two.

The Effects of Music

Domesticated animals can really derive benefits from classical music. In the video footage of Mongkol, it looks like he's having fun. Barton's playing is enriching his night, the same way concerts for older humans in their homes is a great activity to make their days brighter. Something about this style really resonates with creatures, regardless of their species.

It's not exactly clear why animals like Mongkol the elephant love classical music. For now, what really matters is that people like Paul Barton are making it a point to share these compositions with them. As long as musicians are willing to head into the jungle and play, elephants like Mongkol will be there listening.
