Baton Rouge, Louisiana resident Vickie Williams-Tillman, then 56, saved the life of Officer Billy Aime by jumping onto the back of an assailant in 2017.

It's not often that we hear heroic, feel-good stories these days about people who do the right thing when helping others. Today's news is anything but lighthearted; with increasing reports of disease, violence and death, it's about time we read something that renews our faith in humanity and the loving ties that bind us deep down.

Take Vickie Williams-Tillman, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was driving along one day in 2017, minding her own business and completely consumed with her task of running errands for her family. She just happened to see Officer Billy Aime, deep in conversation, and what appeared to be an argument with a civilian on a busy sidewalk, CBS News reports.

Obeying that inner voice

Something inside her told her that the officer was in trouble. Cautiously, she pulled her car over to the side of the road and rolled down her window, asking if she could be of assistance in any way. The minute that Officer Billy took his eyes off of his fellow conversationalist, the man seized the opportunity to grab officer Aime's baton from his belt and start hitting him with it over and over again.

Vickie acted quickly; she got out of her car and began dialing 911 for additional assistance. Bravely, she approached the criminal and jumped on his back, swinging furiously. The two were able to successfully detain the criminal until backup help arrived. When thinking back on that day, Vickie gets rather tearful. "I'm just glad he's still here," she told CBS News. "I looked into his eyes, and he looked at me. I just couldn't leave him there to struggle on his own".

Giving credit where it's due

Vickie was honored at a ceremony involving city police officers, officials and the mayor of Baton Rouge.

“I can’t think of probably very many people on one hand that would not have just rode by, or maybe made a phone call to 911,” Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie said during a news conference, as CBS WAFB reported. “But Ms. Tillman went above and beyond.”

Police were able to arrest and successfully charge the suspect involved in the scuffle. Thomas Bennett is serving time for assault and battery, thanks to Vickie's quick actions and Aime's heroic efforts.
