Christmas time is the most joyous time of the year, especially for children. Kids can’t help but count down the days until Santa Claus puts presents under their tree, but a little girl from California recently made it her mission to help needy families at her school this year.

Katelynn Hardee is a kindergartner at Breeze Hill Elementary School in the town of Vista. Like most kids her age, Katelynn can’t wait until Christmas, but she was shocked to learn that many families at Breeze Hill Elementary struggled with paying for their children’s lunches.

When the little one asked her mother, Karina Hardee, about it, Karina explained that some people struggle with finances and that it is important to have a special place for them in your heart. Upon hearing this, Katelynn knew that she had to do something to help those children struggling at her school.

With her mom’s help, Katelynn set up a stand near her house on the weekend, selling things like cider, cocoa, and cookies. According to People, Katelynn was able to raise about $80, which she donated to Breeze Hill Elementary. The sum paid the negative lunch balances of 123 students.

Katelynn has since been praised for her generosity and enterprising spirit on social media. Speaking with reporters from CNN, Karina said that her little girl just wants to make sure that all of her classmates won’t be hungry and that they can enjoy a snack and lunch at school.

Lori Higley, principal of Breeze Hill Elementary, similarly praised Katelynn in an interview with CNN. Principal Higley says that Katelynn’s example has inspired other students to talk about how they can make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate, proving that you don’t have to be rich or even an adult to do something good for others.

Katelynn’s next goal is to pay off every student’s negative lunch balance at Vista Unified School District. The project, which uses the hashtag #KikisKindnessProject, will see Katelynn and other students selling hot cocoa and baked goods at stands around Vista this weekend.

Once the group reaches its goal, Katelynn would like to start raising money for after school programs that are in danger of being cut due to budgetary constraints. Karina adds that the basic function of Katelynn’s work is kindness, saying that the world needs people to be more kind to one another.
