It is clear that emergency call dispatchers who answer the phone for 911 have challenging careers. You never know what may get thrown your way in that line of work.

The dispatchers must remain cool, calm and collected in order to handle the frantic calls that roll in on a daily basis. It would be difficult to blame one of these people for getting stressed out about their job.

Contrary to popular belief, however, calls to 911 are not always hectic and concerning. Jason Bonham recently received a 911 call from a young girl, and it was unlike anything we could have expected. In addition, it touched our hearts.

Savannah’s Hysterical Call to 911

When Bonham picked up the phone on that eventful night, he promptly noticed that a young girl was speaking on the other end of the line. He effectively adapted to this and spoke in an approachable, understanding tone.

After asking the girl what the problem was, she stated that her father could hardly breathe. Bonham returned to the phone and asked her how old she was; she stated that she was 5 years old. Then, he got the girl’s name, Savannah, and told her that he was getting her and her dad dispatched.

It did not take long until Savannah’s viral personality came to life. She told Bonham that help needed to come more quickly, and he told her that they were on the way. He then asked her whether the front door of the house was unlocked, and she said it was not.

After unlocking the front door at Bonham’s request, the girl stated that she was going to go and urged her father not to worry.

A Noble Purpose

One of Jason Bonham’s leading responsibilities as an emergency call dispatcher is to have an adequate understanding of callers’ situations and states. This helps first responders act more efficiently to deliver the help needed.

Bonham continues to ask Savannah questions in order to obtain as much information as possible. As the conversation goes on, you cannot help but smile at Savannah’s adorable personality.

Bonham proceeds to ask Savannah if anything similar has happened to her father before. She replies that it has not and that he still is still awake. The dispatcher then asks the young girl if her dad is experiencing any chest pain. After asking her dad, she responds that he is.

Savannah then states that she and her dad are in their “jammies” and will have to change before help arrives at their house. The young girl even bothers to state that she is not sure what she is going to wear.

Closing Out the Call

The last few exchanges have seemed trivial, but they actually served the purpose. Bonham was keeping the conversation going with Savannah in order to keep her alert and at her father’s side. Any moment that she wandered off could have ended horribly, so the dispatcher had to prevent this.

Bonham soon returned to the phone to ask the young girl if her dad was still okay and make sure she stayed next to him. After a few more exchanges, she told the dispatcher that they have a small dog that “kind of barks.”

Lastly, Savannah commands her dog to come with her and comforts her dad by telling him to stay calm. Even in an emergency situation, Savannah truly knows how to lighten the mood.

Teach Kids: How to Handle Emergency Situations

As adorable as Savannah may be, it is important to acknowledge how well she adjusted in this urgent predicament. Growing up in Indiana clearly taught her how to behave in such a situation. Teaching your kids how to call 911 and speak to an operator can be the last line of defense against a lost life, so it is good to practice as a family. Here are some examples of questions your kids should know the answers to:

  • What is the family password a relative must state if they need to pick you up from school instead of your parents?
  • What should you do if the smoke alarm ever goes off?
  • How can you tell if someone is choking? If they are, what should you then do?
  • What are the family rules about being near the kitchen stove, swimming pool, and other risky areas?

As you can see, Savannah handled this emergency very well and showed how adorable she is in the process. It is not every day that a 5-year-old girl calls 911 and communicates with the dispatcher with such composure. We encourage you to send this video to your family and friends so they can also experience this priceless moment.
