Katelynn Hardee, a kindergarten student at Breeze Hill Elementary School in California, became aware that some families at her school were not able to pay their debt for their school lunches. After asking her mom numerous questions about it and trying to wrap her five-year-old brain around the situation, Katelynn came up with a plan.

Because she had set up a lemonade stand over the summer, she knew the ropes of fundraising. Making the cookies and cocoa herself, she sold them at her stand for three hours. Karina Hardee, Katelynn’s mom, told Fox 5 that she contacted the school to let them know of her daughter’s funds that were gathered. Karina let them know they would love to put the money toward any of the outstanding accounts.

By the end of the day, Katelynn had raised enough money to cover the balances of 123 students’ lunches. Both Katelynn’s mother and her school district have praised her selfless acts and lauded her compassion and generosity.
