5 Ways Your Daughter Will Change You Entirely

Jan 21, 2019 by apost team

Out of the several years of experience I have as a parent, I have to admit to you that there’s no point in time where parenting comes with a manual labeled ‘parenting 101’. The task is simply filled with a mixture of both difficult and fun days, but this is entirely based on the behavior of your child. When I first bore a child, I always thought that I would have a son then a daughter would follow suit.

However, due to biological factors, my first born was a girl and this turned out as a surprise to me despite the fact that I was mentally prepared for a boy. Blown away by her innocence, I eventually came to realize that having a daughter altered my way of living and thinking in so many ways. I can openly say that I became a changed person.

The fear for my daughter’s safety has now made me quite emotional. Particularly, I easily find myself getting angry or extremely agitated by issues that I never cared about in the past. Before being a parent, I was never very keen on issues affecting women. I would certainly agree to a petition if asked to sign one, but I would never get my hands dirty as I regard to the matter in question. Now with my daughter around, I have to instinctively fight to make this world a better place for her to live.

The moment you start to realize your responsibilities as an adult is when you come to realize that there are so many dangers in this world. One of the biggest issues is endangerment on women today. It’s now reported that now one out of every six women are likely to be victims of an attempted of accomplished rape, and sixty percent of working women are expected to face sexual harassment.

Moreover, child sexual abuse has slightly increased where one out of every five girls are likely to be victims. These issues have always been there and I have always learnt to come to terms with them, but everything changed ever since my daughter came along. Despite my knowledge and awareness about these problems in society, all I fear is for my daughter’s safety at all times.

Before I became a parent, I used to have the false impression that avoiding people and issues would eventually maintain my peace. Consequently, this wasn’t the case because I would finally let people put me down for no reason. My daughter’s presence has now taught me to learn how to display bravery, by calling out wrongs and standing up for that which is right.

Now I’m able to confront people appropriately and even demand more of what is expected of them. At the end of the day, I’m now able to set clear boundaries between the people I associate with and myself. Moreover, I have learned how to plan realistically as well as go after my ambitions, which is something that would frequently bring me to nervousness.

Before having my daughter, there are several issues and situations that I was going through which would eventually bring out the crazy in me. If you had a chance to ask my peers of what I was like before parenthood, they will outwardly tell you that I was nothing like I am now. Each and every individual that came across me then knew me as young, fun, and a hint of wild that tends to be a notch higher whenever I made the wrong decisions.

Personally, I can say that I was young, naïve, and reckless. However, little did I know that all this would come to an end. Now I am in a position where I have to question every single decision that I make for my daughter’s sake. I’m now able to clinch onto my calm senses and avoid the unnecessary drama that I almost couldn’t avoid back then.

If you happen to be a mother, you can agree that raising a daughter is basically just like raising a mini same gender version as yourself. This only means that she will always look up to you from the day she was born. She’ll ultimately want to turn out just like you, which will prompt you to better your behavior in the long run. Long gone are the days where I’d wake up and bluntly utter harsh comments against my body and physique.

The big downside about this is that it’ll always reflect to my daughter that I lack self-esteem and confidence, which can lead her to think similarly about herself. All in all, I have found myself being more cautious with generally almost everything that I do, such as what I wear when leaving the house, what I say and what I do around her.

Be it in the past or present, being a parent will never be a piece of cake. It would be necessary to reflect and consider the facts in this article, in order to create awareness and bring insight to other parents out there. If you identified with this piece, pass it along to all the parents of daughters you know!
