5 Ways To Quiet Your Mind

Sep 12, 2018 by apost team

There are many ways in which an uncontrolled mind is similar to a young child who wants to run wild through the crowded streets of the city, only capable of sitting still for short periods of time before jumping up with a new burst of energy. Allowing the brain to run and run continuously without any control is a great way to turn your mind into a prison. It might happen so slowly that you don't even realize it, but it will happen.

But it's actually possible to free the mind, even when this sounds like an impossible task. Humans are creatures who can adapt to a number of extraordinary circumstances. We spend our entire lives picking up and dropping habits that suit us best in a moment. In a way, the reason that our brains run wild is because we've installed a chaotic operating system into them. Creating a peaceful mind will happen if you let your brain go back to its "factory default" settings - an original natural state of balance and harmony. Does that sound difficult? Don't worry. These are some techniques that you can practice to gain control over your thoughts.

1. Positive Focus

You should put an increased focus into the positive things about yourself and the positive things in your surroundings. Mass confusion and disorder exists in the world around us because we perpetuated it with our own thoughts. Every person alive knows what it's like to let negative thinking prevail. The physical world reflects our thoughts back at us. If you shift your focus to the things that bring you joy, or the aspects of your life for which you're thankful, you can give yourself a more positive outlook on the world. As a result of this, you'll start to have a greater sense of inner peace due to the lack of emphasis on inward or outward negativity.

Your energy flows in whatever direction you focus your attention. By becoming aware of your thoughts and channeling them in the direction you want them to go, you'll achieve peaceful equilibrium.

2. Peaceful Mantras

Take a second to pay attention to what's happening in your brain. What thoughts do you see there? You probably see that the main part of your thoughts is focused on the things you need to get done today, or worries you have about things in the past, or anger you're holding onto, or fear for the future, or even a litany of self-doubt. You shouldn't feel bad about the amount of negativity you have in your head. The world is full of negative energy, and it's easy for that to affect us. It's difficult to maintain a positive mindset, and you'll need to give yourself constant focus on it.

If you can tell that anxiety is manifesting, stop it in its tracks by repeating peaceful mantras. Bring up mental images of peaceful things like the beach or a warm and happy bedroom. When the world around you is negative, be aware that you don't have to live in an internal negative space. You can reshape your thoughts to live in a positive space instead.

3. Regular Meditation

You've probably heard a lot of people recommend meditation. The reason they do is because it works. Meditation is a way of stopping your thoughts from flowing and constantly bombarding your conscious mind. Instead, you bring your mind into a place where stillness is the most important thing. It's not necessary to shut your brain down completely to have an effective meditation session, but many people who meditate do report feeling their thoughts slow and become more relaxed. You'll also gain a greater awareness of your own body through controlled breathing. Meditation is a great way of reminding your body and mind of your presence and control.

To meditate, all you have to do is sit in a quiet space and focus on breathing alone for 10 minutes each day. This helps clear the clutter in your mind and allow you a greater sense of inner peace.

4. Being Present in Your Life

Stop thinking about the things that happened yesterday that you're still hung up on, or all of the things you need to do today. Don't obsess about whatever uncertainties the future holds. You'll deal with those things when the time comes. You shouldn't spend so much time obsessing that you forget to live in the moment. Obsessive thought patterns can lead to mental illnesses and physical health repercussions. The majority of anxiety people experience happens because they're spending too much time living outside of the present. If your thoughts are carrying you to the past or the future, practice refocusing on the present moment. Take in at least three different sensory details and try to focus on what's happening.

Your body should flow easily through each moment like you're swimming with the current, rather than struggling against it.

5. Connect With Nature

No matter whether you live in the city or the country, you can benefit by reconnecting with nature. Unplug yourself from your smartphone, computer, and all of your social media feeds. Stop distracting yourself with brightly-colored electronic games. Go into nature and let your body become in tune with the universe. You'll feel much more grounded because of it.
