It can be hard to recognize when you have found someone with whom you can happily spend the rest of your life. One reason for this is you probably will not experience it too many times. By its very nature, it is an uncommon event. Most relationships simply don't have that much staying power.

So how do you figure it out, especially if you are young and have never been in this kind of relationship before? Well, you can ask yourself if the relationship has the following qualities:

1. You trust each other

Trust is an essential quality in an intimate relationship. It can be hard to establish trust. Trust must be tested. It only occurs after you have taken some risk and they have looked out for your welfare instead of taking advantage of you.

Sometimes, these things are thrust upon the relationship. Something bad happens beyond your control and both partners rise to the occasion. But you can also build trust by taking smaller risks that won't lead to catastrophe if your trust is violated and see how they treat the thing you entrusted to them, such as a small secret.

2. There is mutual esteem.

Both people seeing the other as respectable and respectful is essential. This means seeing each other as whole people who both have dreams and finding the dreams and goals of your partner worthy. This means you are both proud to introduce your partner in social settings. It means you fight fair and mutually support a dignified path forward when there is conflict.

3. An absence of jealousy.

Some people are innately prone to being jealous. These people generally are emotionally needy, and their sense of never having enough is what drives them to be jealous of other people. But even otherwise healthy, grounded people can feel jealous in an unhealthy relationship. When your partner is giving gushing attention to someone in public that they know only superficially and not giving you enough positive attention, it hurts.

If situations that make you feel jealous are a commonplace occurrence in a relationship, there is something seriously wrong with the relationship. So one test of a healthy relationship is that it is one that does not make either partner feel insecure and jealous. An absence of jealousy is evidence that both partners are getting their needs adequately met within the relationship.

4. You laugh a lot with each other.

A strong relationship can be tested by drama, but the relationship shouldn't be based on drama. It should be based on positive feelings. There are ways to actively nurture positive feelings. Some people just know how to do that. Others need to work on learning how. But a quick and dirty test of a solid relationship is that you frequently laugh together and feel other positive feelings, such happiness or joy. The bright spots help a relationship weather the inevitable storms of life.

5. You are both better for being together.

A strong relationship will be life-enhancing for both partners. It will help each pursue their dreams and the future they desire. It helps them both be calmer, kinder and stronger in the face of life's difficulties. It is not a one way street that only benefits one of them.
