5-Month-Old Baby Severely Malnourished After Vegan Parents Fed Him Only Potato Mash

A 5-month-old baby boy was so severely malnourished that he had to be hospitalized, angering many who cannot believe that the vegan parents let their child become so underweight.

Robert Buskey, 31, and Julia French, 20, of Titusville, Florida said that they were only feeding their baby a potato mash that they found online. The vegan parents had ignored doctor's orders to better nourish their infant, resulting in the baby barely gaining one pound in his five months of life, reports WFTV.

The unfortunate baby is now under the care of the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Both of the parents were arrested and charged with felony child abuse. The baby was found after a tip that was relayed to the DCF. Authorities found the infant clinging to life because he was so malnourished.

The official arrest affidavit said that the baby was unable to move because of such poor muscle tone. He was also extremely lethargic as a result of his body not being able to maintain proper body temperature or blood sugar levels, according to CrimeOnline.

After just one night of being hooked up to a hospital IV, the child has already gained half of a pound. The parents did not answer the police when asked about why they did not fulfill the prescription for the special organic formula for their child.

Buskey is scheduled to appear in court on March 7. He is currently being held at the Brevard County Jail on a $77,500 bond. French is also incarcerated at the Brevard County Jail on a bond of $50,000, according to MEAWW.
