With a new year just around the corner, people are rushing to make resolutions. While resolutions can sometimes be beneficial, if we’re being honest most of us would have to admit that the majority of our resolutions fail within a few days.

We are creatures of habit, so it’s hard for us to turn over a new leaf simply because we turn over a new year on the calendar!

Rather than wear yourself down with a list of resolutions, we suggest that you choose to instead start implementing these five daily rituals to ensure a successful 2019!

1. Be Thankful for What You Have

It seems like an odd truth, but generally those who take the time to appreciate the things that they already have end up with more than those who spend their lives chasing the end of the rainbow. Rather than running yourself ragged each day, set aside some time when you can step back and truly appreciate what you have in your life. By refocusing and experiencing gratitude for your family, current home, the food you have to eat, and the wealth you have, you will be able to work toward success with peace in your heart.

Start practicing thankfulness by spending time meditating on the blessings in your life, writing lists of what you have been given, and penning thank-you letters or making phone calls to show your appreciation for those who have helped you through life thus far.

2. Quit Hitting the Snooze Button

Yes, it’s true, most of us enjoy sleeping in as late as possible; however, research shows that getting up earlier can actually provide you with a more successful life! Most high-ranking CEOs, athletes, and millionaires begin their days at 5:30 AM or earlier.

While we all have a set twenty-four hours in a day, those who get up early in the morning often report that their days seem longer and filled with more possibility. So, rather than hitting the snooze button and squeezing in every spare minute of sleep that you can get, practice rising early in the morning and forcing yourself to start the day. Once your body adjusts to the change in habit, you will be thankful you did it!

3. Employ Meditation in Your Daily Life

While meditation is often linked to religions and mindfulness practices, it is something that everyone should start doing in their daily lives. Meditation gives you the opportunity to unwind, refocus, and get a better start to your day.

Research shows that meditating daily can help by reducing stress and anger, increasing gratitude, and making people happier over-all. Many people choose to mediate first thing in the morning, making it possible to start their day on a happier note. Since you’ll be getting up earlier, you’ll have more time to set aside for this important practice.

4.Crack Open the Books

Once we get out of school, most of us leave reading behind; however, reading is a certain way to increase your levels of success. Studies have found that the people who are the most successful are those who read the most books! Successful people such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett both agreed that, if they could choose a superpower, speed reading would be the one that they would target. Obviously, reading isn’t just a past-time – it’s a tool to help us move forward!

While it can be hard to find reading time when we’re busy with work and family life, even a few minutes spent reading each day can make a difference. Look for times when you usually scroll through your social media accounts or watch television, then replace them with 15-20 minutes of reading.

If reading simply isn’t an option, you can choose to do the next best thing: Listen to audiobooks. Audiobooks provide us with the messages of books, but they can be enjoyed during work commutes or as a family.

6. Get Our of Your Comfort Zone

We all have things that scare us and areas where we feel safe. Over time, we develop a comfort zone where we do the same things day-after-day, assured that they are safe since they are a part of our routine. While a comfort zone is your brain’s natural way of keeping you from being hurt or embarrassed, it can also destroy your ability to reach your full potential in life.

Rather than live in your comfort zone, start the new year out by doing things that are somewhat scary. Be willing to take risks and tackle challenges that seem daunting. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to try something dangerous like sky-diving or swimming with sharks; instead, you can choose things that force you out of your comfort zone while still providing benefits to your life.

For example: Ask someone you like out on a date, try for a new job position, enter a contest, learn a new hobby or skill, reconnect with an old friend, or do a live performance such as participating in a play.

If you are willing to grow from your experiences, doing frightening things can help you to move forward in life while increasing your confidence and creating lasting memories.
