5.6 Lbs Avocado, Enough To Make Guacamole For 20 People Enters Guinness Book Of World Records As World's Heaviest

A typical avocado weighs less than a pound when harvested. However, an avocado recently harvested in Hawaii came in at a whopping 5.6 pounds. It set a world record.

The Pokini family lives in Hawaii, where they have an ideal climate suited for growing avocados. They received the seed for their avocado tree from an in-law, Dickie Marciel. He got the seed from his parents' avocado tree in Kailua, Oahu

At first, they didn't think the tree would survive. While it was still setting roots in the pot, their son pulled it out twice. Once they got it in the ground, it started growing quite well. They trimmed it a bit, but didn't do anything special to the tree.

It came into bloom and started to develop avocados. The growing process took about 10 months from bloom to harvest according to CNN

When they realized they had a potential world record size avocado, the family took steps to document its size. The process to apply for the world record wasn't easy or quick.

They first had to find a certified scale, so they could take an accurate measurement. The family asked several experts and witness to be there during the weight process. That way they had testimony to its accuracy. Everyone there had to fill out a witness statement. They also took a videotape of the process for visual evidence.

The family applied to Guinness. It took three months before Guinness accepted their application. Then, they had to submit evidence of the record. It took another three months for Guinness to reply, certifying the world record size of the avocado.

The old record was a 5.5-pound avocado grown by Felicidad Pasalo in Hilo, Hawaii. That record was set in January 2018.

Oversize avocados are more common than you might expect. Several of the world's largest avocados can be found in Australia. Known as Avozillas, those weigh in at five times larger than an average avocado. They are grown commercially and sold in specialty grocery stores.

The Pokini family didn't sell their record-holding avocado. They decided to make it into guacamole instead. It made enough to feed 20 people. It usually takes 8 to 10 average size avocados to feed that many.

The family isn't stopping with this world record. The next harvest season is in December. They hope to get even larger fruit off the tree this coming season.
