Edgardo Zúñiga Juárez has been on a mission to help the dogs of Mexico for the past six years. The 49-year-old man started his journey in the coastal community of Buceras and is slowly making his way around the perimeter of the country. In total, Edgardo has saved over 500 animals from abuse and homelessness in his travels. For his service to the canines of Mexico, Edgardo has earned the nickname “Perros” from social media users. Thanks to his supporters on social media, a documentary was recently made about him on Facebook entitled Edgardo Perros – Saviour of the Dogs.

Speaking with the documentary crew, Edgardo says that he was inspired to help the dogs of Mexico when he began traveling throughout the rural parts of the country. Edgardo found that, unlike dogs in cities or towns, dogs in rural areas had no one to take care of them if they ever became sick or hurt. Having a love of travel and a love of dogs, Edgardo decided to dedicate his life to helping these animals.

When he’s on the road, Edgardo only travels with a small cart to carry his belongings. Edgardo also brings his own three dogs with him, Negro, Blanco, and Chilletas. Edgardo’s three pups are his constant companions and teach the dogs that he finds on his journey how to play and be happy again. Once he finds stray dogs that he can help, Edgardo sets out to find homes for them, ensuring that they do not have to be alone anymore. Part of what Edgardo does to get the dogs ready for adoption is teaching them how to behave as pets, making sure that they get all their vaccinations, and having them spayed or neutered.

By far the saddest part of Edgardo’s journey is coming across dogs suffering from abuse. Looking at them, Edgardo faces the difficult realization that other human beings are behind their suffering. Despite the pain these abusers cause these animals, Edgardo does not hate them. Rather, Edgardo feels sorry for individuals who inflict pain on animals because he says that they have never experienced love or companionship.

Once Edgardo is done with his journey on the perimeter of Mexico, he says that he might start helping dogs in urban areas.

What do you think of Edgardo’s mission to help the abused and homeless dogs of Mexico?
