Becoming a parent is one of the most amazing experiences a person can have. There are so many moments to look forward to and cherish as parents get the opportunity to watch their little ones grow up right before their eyes. Although she knew it could be risky or complicated, one woman decided that she was ready to become a mother all on her own at the age of 40.

As she approached her 40th birthday, Michele Elizaga from Arizona realized that she still hadn’t met the perfect guy yet and felt that time was running out for her chance to ever have a baby. After reaching the milestone birthday, she knew that she needed to take matters into her own hands and researched ways she could become the mother she had always dreamed of becoming. It was a long road ahead, but Elizaga was determined to make her dream come true.

After risking it all and spending thousands of dollars on one vial from a sperm donor, Elizaga finally had everything she had hoped for — she was pregnant. She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy by the name of Matthew in June 2019, and her life has been absolutely amazing ever since. Elizaga is now 43 years old, and her son is 2 years old. While their lives have been full of challenges, they have also been full of great opportunities and beautiful memories. The mother seems sure she made the right decision to go into parenthood on her own and has never looked back.

In June 2021, the Daily Mail reported that Elizaga had decided to finally become a mother all on her own after celebrating her 40th birthday. She had always hoped to become a mother, but she hadn’t met the right man yet, and time was not on her side. Her friend encouraged her to do it alone, thus beginning Elizaga’s journey into motherhood.

The hopeful woman spent all $5,000 of her savings on one vial from a sperm donor, even though it was unlikely she would get pregnant on the first try, according to the Daily Mail. Fortunately, everything went exactly as planned, and Elizaga soon found herself pregnant. “I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I still can’t believe it. I was in complete shock, but I was so happy.”

Because of her age, Elizaga underwent prenatal testing when she was 12-weeks pregnant, according to the Daily Mail. This was when she discovered she was having a boy and that there was a 90% chance he would have Down syndrome. The expecting mother was shocked, but she spent the rest of her pregnancy researching as much as possible about Down syndrome and how to best care for her son.

On June 3, 2019, Elizaga’s son Matthew was born with Down syndrome. He spent two months in NICU but was beautiful and well, as per the Daily Mail. “It’s been quite the journey,” Elizaga said. At 43 years old, Elizaga is just as happy as ever being a single mother, despite all the challenges that come with the role. “I wouldn’t change it for the world, and I couldn’t imagine him any other way,” she said. “It has been such an empowering experience, and I have been astounded by my strength and ability."
