4-Year-Old Girl With Cerebral Palsy Takes First Unsupported Steps On Her 1st Day Of School

If you remember how you felt on the first day of a new school year, maybe you remember feeling nervous and excited. That probably won't compare to the feelings of this little girl as she tackles her first day of school in a very big way for her: she walked by herself to the building.

You see, little Millie had cerebral palsy and so ordinary things like walking unassisted could be big obstacles for her. Read on to learn more about Millie's amazing story, her family, and the courage they showed as they literally stood together in the face of her hardship.

Millie and Evan are twins who were born in 2014 to Natalie and Chris Hughes in the UK. Millie was the smaller twin and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy fairly quickly. She struggled with the same things her brother excelled at, like sitting up, crawling, and walking. Nevertheless, her parents got her the best care available including surgery and physical therapy.

Millie had new opportunities before her now. Would their efforts pay off? Would she gain greater control of her muscles? What dreams would Millie be able to achieve in her life? One of those dreams came true on her first day of school.

With her loyal brother Evan by her side and Mom helping her, Millie made a literal and figurative first step in her progress towards a more able-bodied life. At school for the first time, and wearing her little school uniform, Millie concentrated with all her might.

Lifting each leg took an incredible effort. Her pink leg braces did their work. Mom cheered her on, telling her she could do it. Millie took tottering steps across the brick walkway and reached the school itself.

Millie's effort was recorded for family and community posterity. Because Millie knew she was more than her disability only, she was able to show her strength and courage to the world. Her struggles did not define her essence.

Challenges are an integral part of what we face in this world, but the triumphs and incredibly moving moments of love and pride we experience outweigh the problems.

Congratulations to Millie and her family for this transformative journey.
