Maya Tisdale lives in Michigan and deals with her cerebral palsy on a daily basis. It is no wonder that so many people became emotional when Maya was able to take her first independent steps. Maya was born four months early at only 26 weeks of gestation. At the time of her birth, Maya only weighed 1 pound and 10 ounces. Her will to fight earned her the nickname of "Mighty Miss Maya" while in the NICU.

The brave girl was diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy before she turned two. This type of cerebral palsy makes it difficult for Maya to stand on her own for more than just a few seconds.

"I'm walking! I'm walking!" Maya exclaims in the video.

Maya's mother, Ann, said to ABC News that her daughter has an independent streak. Despite her physical challenges, Maya still tries to keep up with her two older brothers. Maya has undergone a host of treatments and therapies designed to increase her ability to move.

After much research, the family decided to travel to St. Louis Children’s Hospital in order to undergo a surgical procedure called a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy. The surgery was a success and after much work, Maya was finally able to take those steps.

Maya still has a long road ahead of her. The cerebral palsy will always be a part of her life. Daily treatments and stretching will help keep her on her feet but it will not be easy. Fortunately, she has proven that she is up for any challenge.

Now you can share in Maya's joy as she takes her first steps. After you have watched this video, be sure to spread the triumph to everyone else that you know. Everyone should be rooting on this special little girl.
