4-Year-Old Boy Who Faced Heart Surgery Alone Found His Forever Family With His Anesthesiologist

Hospitals can be intimidating places for anyone, but especially for a child facing heart surgery. In January 2022, a moment inside Children’s Nebraska in Omaha changed the lives of a young foster child and the doctor assigned to his care.

Pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist Amy Beethe met a 4-year-old boy named True who was preparing for a complex procedure related to his congenital heart disease. What stunned her was not only the seriousness of his condition, but the fact that he was alone. “He was sitting there all alone and it just kind of took me aback that this 4-year-old was going to be undergoing heart surgery and just no one was there,” Amy told KETV.

True had already undergone open-heart surgery to treat his congenital heart condition, a category of structural heart defects present at birth, as defined bleby the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Complications required further intervention. However, his caseworker was unable to attend due to COVID, leaving the young boy without a familiar adult at his bedside.

Throughout his hospital stay, Amy found herself drawn to True’s resilience. What began as a professional concern gradually deepened into something more personal. The connection formed in those hospital corridors would soon grow beyond medicine and into family.

As True recovered from surgery, Amy and her husband Ryan — who had previously fostered and adopted three children — felt compelled to step in. Their home had already become a place of stability and care for children in need. Meeting True solidified their decision.

Ryan told KETV:

“We went up and met True in the hospital, and it didn’t take long to fall in love with him and know that we needed him in our family.”

Not long afterward, the couple officially adopted him, expanding their already large household. The Beethe family now includes eight children. Three are biological, while five are adopted.

Among them is True’s older sister, Laney. True also has four other biological siblings who were adopted by extended family members and friends, ensuring that important connections remained intact.

According to the Child Welfare Information Gateway, maintaining sibling relationships can play a vital role in a child’s emotional well-being after adoption. For Ryan, the rewards of adoption ripple far beyond the individual child.

He shared:

“The trickle effect that it has, like, they make us better people and it’s just — you can’t imagine your life without them.”

Amy echoed that sentiment with fierce maternal pride.

“He’s truly become my son. You know, I would battle for him like anybody else. You’re a mama bear, and you fight hard,” she gushed.

True, who is 9 years old at the time of writing, described his life with his big, blended family with simple yet no less substantial gratitude:

“It’s been good because they’ve been nice, they’re caring. They’re my mom and dad.”

What began as a routine assignment in an operating room evolved into a lifelong bond. True arrived at the hospital alone, but he left with something far greater than a successful surgery — he found a forever family.
