Isabell screamed when she saw the window to her father's car was completely shattered and there was blood streaming from his chest. A bullet from Stepanski had struck Brian.

The third-grader was a quick thinker. She understood that the life of her father may depend on the action she took next. The young girl held a sweatband against her father's chest to compress the wound as he continued to drive for help.

Brian was able to make it to a fire station while his daughter continued to apply pressure to his life-threatening wound. Once at the fire station, firefighters delivered advanced emergency care to Brian.

The Sheriff's Office in Placer County honoured Isabell with the Citizens Medal of Merit. The medal is given to citizens who display great heroism in the county. Isabell is the sixth person in Placer County to ever receive the honor.

Sheriff Devon Bell expressed amazement at the composure demonstrated by Isabell and could only wonder how the young girl knew to maintain direct pressure to the wound throughout the frightening experience.

Isabell has five brothers and sisters and says the experience has resulted in her receiving a lot more recognition than she is used to. It was amusing to listen as she explained how she was in the past referred to at school as Emily's little sister. She says now her sister is referred to as Isabell's older sister.
