Adopting a child is one of the most beautiful acts a family can do in our society. Just as kids are given homes and security, a family grows in love and happiness through the selfless act of adoption.

As adopted children grow older, they often come to wonder who their birth parents are and why they gave them up for adoption. The search for the answer can be consuming and fruitless for many, who are never able to find their birth parents.

When an adopted person is able to find their biological parents, the reunion is one of the most joyous and emotional moments of their life. One adopted man from South Carolina learned this lesson firsthand this holiday season.

Steve Stansfield is a 38-year old resident of Bluffton, South Carolina. Adopted at only two months old from Catholic Social Services in Philadelphia, Steve’s adoptive parents were honest with Steve from an early age about the adoption. Speaking with reporters from the Island Packet, Jerry, Steve’s adoptive father, said he always told Steve that his biological parents gave him up for love.

Jerry never stopped reminding Steve that just as his adoptive parents love him, so too do his birth parents. From a young age, Steve became enamored with the story of his adoption, keeping a stuffed dog named Sherlock his birth mother gave him throughout his life. Now married with two children of his own, Steve nevertheless wanted to find his birth parents.

Trying to locate his birth parents through any means, Steve was aided in his quest by his wife Erin and his adoptive parents. Jerry and Steve’s adoptive mother, Kathy, had actually tried to find Steve’s birth parents several years ago but were unsuccessful. Due to a change in Pennsylvania law, Steve was able to find his birth certificate. Examining the document, Steve put the names of his birth parents into an internet search and prayed for a successful outcome.

Not disappointed, Steve learned that his parents were Bill and CarolAnn Foran and that he had three siblings. Erin quickly contacted Steve’s sister, Nicole Foran, through Facebook to arrange a meeting.

Nicole was overjoyed by Erin’s message. In a private message, Nicole described how the Forans had been looking for Steve for years. Nicole described how Steve’s birth parents were very emotional about the subject of the adoption.

The couple had given Steve up when they were both only 16 years old and worried for decades if they had made the right decision.

As the moment of Steve’s first meeting with Bill and CarolAnn drew near, Erin set up a camera in their living room to record the event. Stepping into the home, a sobbing CarolAnn ran to Steve, apologizing to him up for adoption. A teary-eyed Steve embraced his mom, telling her there was no need for an apology.
