Florida Deputy Bill Dunn pulled a 3-year-old girl from her mother’s hot car, the girl showing scarce signs of life after being trapped there overnight.

On June 17, Father's Day of this year, Seminole County Deputy Bill Dunn pulled the limp body of a 3-year-old girl from her mother’s car, where she spent 12 hours trapped in the Florida heat.

When she showed no immediate signs of life, Dunn didn’t stop to think, running, instead for his police car with the girl cradled against him and quickly placed her beneath the A/C vent.

When her eyes began to flutter, he knew she was alive.

Not risking the wait for an ambulance, he took her to the hospital in the cruiser, later recalling the way that adrenaline pumped through him as he handed her off to hospital staff, not knowing whether or not she would survive. For Dunn, who was a father, himself, the case hit especially hard, that day.

The girl’s mother, Casey Keller, made the 911 call Dunn originally responded to, claiming her car had been stolen with her daughter inside. Police later discovered she’d gone on a late night liquor run, taking her children along. Upon returning home, she forgot about her daughter until morning.

Thanks to Dunn and the expert work of hospital medical staff, the young girl survived. Dunn was later reunited with her, bringing along a stuffed animal “just to break the ice.”
