Going through a divorce can be an embittering process, sometimes becoming so ugly that, after the dust settles, ex-spouses refuse to so much as reside in the same zip code, never mind coming around 28 years later, during their own vacation, to mow their ex-spouses lawn.

Codie LaChelle McPhate's mother and father divorced 28 years ago, but have a healthy enough relationship to co-parent. Recently, Codie caught something heartwarming that is making its way around the internet. Though her father does not live in the area, he stopped by his ex-wife's home while on vacation.

Codie, who works as a photographer for 1822 Photography, took a photo of her dad mowing her mother's lawn.

“My mom has bad knees, and my stepdad works out of town,” she said. “When my younger siblings questioned, ‘Why is your dad mowing mom’s lawn?’ I told them, ‘Because, she needed help, and he knew she couldn’t get out here to do it, so he did.’”

Codie’s father said that he and his ex-wife made a conscious decision, as they went through the process, to be adults and treat each other with respect and compassion.

“Because no matter how their marriage ended,” Codie said, “They both loved each other very much, at one point, and that, that love, counts for something. That if they were going to raise their children to be good, kind people, they needed to be good, kind people.”

They kept that promise, and according to Codie’s estimation, became amazing parents who will still do anything for each other. And that includes both her biological and step-parents. Codie’s father, though, is far from seeking internet-appointed sainthood. Instead, he's trying to show others ”that you don’t need to act like an angelic pastor on Lent, but that we should all choose kindness, whenever we can.”

Does someone in your own life embody these traits? Better yet, are you that person for someone else? We could probably all do with representing the spirit of such a kind and simple act a little better, in our daily lives. Pass this article on if it made you smile :)
