The Australian wildfires are one of the biggest disasters in the history of the nation. The fires have burned 46 million acres, resulting in the deaths of 35 people and the destruction of thousands of homes. While the human toll is catastrophic, animals have also been grievously harmed by the calamity.

It is estimated that over a billion animals have died in the fires. Even worse, much of the animals’ habitats have also been ravaged, leading to bigger problems well into the future. People from around the world are donating to help the beleaguered people of Australia, including a young college student from Canada.

As first reported in the Daily Mail, 23-year-old Kelsey Trimble has been working tirelessly to help the animals harmed by the fires. In her native Toronto, Kelsey has been working with Animal Rescue Craft Guild, an organization that designs, sews, and recycles items for the animals of Australia. After seeing the plight the poor animals faced, Kelsey knew that she had to do more than just volunteer or donate money. The young woman used all of the money that she saved while working in college to buy a plane ticket to Australia and help the people and animals of the country in person.

As Kelsey told reporters in an interview with News.au.com, she brought the donations of 20 people in the form of three suitcases. Writing on her Facebook account, Kelsey thanked all the people that donated to the cause of the animals. The college student added that her action was a team effort and that the three bags of humanitarian relief, which each weigh 50 pounds, will make a big difference for the animals of Australia. Once again expressing her gratitude at all the people for their support, Kelsey says that she has never seen people come together in such a way before.

Among the items in the three bags Kelsey brought are 85 nests, 12 bat wraps, 20 pouches, and 2 beds. Additionally, Kelsey also brought $1,200 in medical supplies with her. When asked about the logistics of collecting such a large amount of supplies, Kelsey told News.au.com that most of the items were either dropped off at her house or picked up by her from donors. Kelsey also set up meeting places for people who wanted to donate items but lived too far from Toronto. Kelsey made sure to note that people all over Canada are concerned about the situation animals are facing in Australia and desperately wanted to help rescuers.

When it came time to deliver the items to Australia, Kelsey says that she spent about $2,800 on transportation alone. The young woman says that despite the expenditures, she is motivated by her love of animals. Kelsey continues in her efforts to help the animals by distributing supplies to rescue centers, sometimes even waking up at 4 in the morning.
