A trip to the beach took a deadly turn when a 17-year-old boy sprang into action to rescue two swimmers in distress. The Miami teen made the ultimate sacrifice when he attempted to save the lives of the two people who were trapped in a powerful ocean current.

Cristian Burgos noticed 25-year-old Elvia Venegas and her 9-year-old son Maynor Montez being pushed further out to sea by the current as they tried unsuccessfully to break free and make it back to shore. Cristian swam out to the pair and was able to provide enough of a push to successfully break the pair from the current, which allowed them to make it safely back to shore with assistance from others on the beach.

Unfortunately, Cristian found that his selfless act had left him trapped in the current and unable to break free. As people on the beach noticed his distress, they attempted to form a human chain to bring him safely back to shore. Although rescuers were able to retrieve Cristian from the water, he was barely conscious and slipped into a coma. Doctors were unable to save him and he was removed from life support.

Elvia Venegas, the mother who was rescued by Christian is quoted by CBS Miami as saying, “I am just eternally grateful at this moment.” Christian’s friends and family say that he was known for helping others and they were not surprised that he did not hesitate to respond. As reported by CBS Miami, Christian’s mom released a statement in tribute to her only child: “He’s the best son. He’s the most beautiful person I have had. He is a hero.”
