Aug 21, 2020 by apost team

Florida is home to a lot of dangerous wildlife. Alligators are so prevalent that they even have a highway that is nicknamed "Alligator Alley."

In 2019, a group of hunters captured a 16-foot "monster" python in an area of Alligator Alley in Broward County.

But nothing compares to the destruction that the Burmese python is doing to the Sunshine State. These nonvenomous constrictors are generally found in south Florida. Most are uncovered around the Florida Everglades.

The Burmese python has become a threat to the wildlife that is iconic to Florida. This includes rabbits, gators, raccoons, bobcats, and deer. This sort of snake constricts and then swallows these larger animals whole. They have some pretty crazy stories about uncovering these invasive species. This may even be the craziest.

A 16-Foot Burmese Python Found

Back on the weekend of July 19, 2019, there was a huge Burmese python discovery, CBS4 reported. This was only four miles from the infamous Alligator Alley. A python that measured nearly 16-feet was found under an old camp house in Broward County. This traditional Floridian wood-framed house was right next to two campers. Not just your average person could capture such a python. "Alligator" Ron Bergeron came to the rescue. The man in the black cowboy hat is an Everglades conservationist.

He knows his stuff. The South Florida Water Management District Board member uncovered something very big. In addition to moving the 165-pound snake, he removed 40-50 eggs. Those eggs were in different stages of hatching. At least half of these eggs could have become more adult Burmese pythons further invading the Florida Everglades ecosystem. They could have had more babies and made this problem even bigger.

What Is Biggest Burmese Python Captured?

While this 16-foot Burmese python, with 40-50 eggs was a big haul, this was not the biggest capture. According to CBS4 News, that capture happened on April 5, 2019 in Big Cypress national Preserve. The giant snake measured in at over 17-feet long. It weighed in at 140 pounds and carried 73 eggs.

How Did Florida Get Burmese Pythons?

Conservationists believe that the invasive Burmese python problem started about two decades ago. They presume that people released their pets into the Florida wilds.

Officials believe that there are now about 100,000 Burmese pythons in the Florida Everglades. Eradicating them is difficult. They are sending out qualified people to continue to hunt and capture these invasive creatures.
