14-Year-Old Courtney Hadwin Returns To ‘AGT’ Stage With An Original Song, And Everyone Agrees It’s A Jam

One of the real surprises on last season's America's Got Talent was Courtney Hadwin. At age 14, Courtney appeared shy when she took the stage and the song she had chosen to sing was "Hard to Handle," made famous by no less a great soul-singer than Otis Redding.

When the music started the transformation amazed the audience and judges. So impressed was Howie Mandel with this intense, authentic singing by Hadwin that he said he wished he was a record producer so he could sign her to a deal, but there was one thing he could do. He went to the center of the judges' table and hit the "Golden Buzzer."

Many who watched on television had the same thoughts as Howie Mandel. Courtney "was from another era." At this young age, her voice and her movements seemed to be right out of the 1960s. You couldn't help but think of Janis Joplin, Tina Turner and great women singers with gritty voices who became stars and won worldwide acclaim.

Courtney Hadwin seemed destined to reach the finals of AGT and a likely choice to win it all. However, after making it very far on the show she didn't capture enough votes to make it into the last rounds.

If you're one of her many fans or you somehow didn't get to see and hear her last season, Courtney is back. Last Monday her first appearance on America’s Got Talent: The Champions aired nationally. Once again, the slight-looking girl with long hair seemed painfully shy until the band hit the first beat and then she suddenly turned into the fierce singing and free dancing star.

The song had a sound that was right out of the great days of rhythm and blues and funk. She even added some gestures that showed she had grown up with hip-hop and rap. After the number concluded the audience cheered wildly and the judges heaped praise as she reverted to her quiet and almost meek stance at center stage.

The first three judges -- Simon, Heidi, and Mel B. all gave glowing, enthusiastic comments on her performance. But it wasn't until the fourth judge, the one who had given her the Golden Buzzer last season, Howie Mandel, that the question on everyone's mind was posed.

He thought she was great and then admitted, "I've never heard that song. Whose song is it?"

Courtney answered timidly, "It's an original composition." Everyone was floored. The judges all seemed in awe of the talent this 14-year-old from England possessed. Her song and performance were a total jam.
